Now, go to :

1) <http://www.sheencal.com/Badge%20button.gif>

Notice the 2 ‘sheens’ at the top-left and bottom-right of the black circle. I mean, those 2 whitish reflection rays of light on the black circle. Got it? 🙂

2) Now, go to : <http://www.sheencal.com/Sample1.gif>

Compare this with the previous image. It sucks! :p(I did this 2nd image myself)

Now, the problem is : how do I create those ‘sheens’ like in the first image? I believe the standard Layer Effects cannot achieve this(I’m using PhotoShop 6.0)…..so the only way is through handmade-highlighting.

I’ve tried, but for some reason, the effect looks really fake or unnatural. Does anyone has some tips on how to achive the sheens in image 1?

Thanks a lot! :):)

#2 is much nicer than the 1st, or am I missing something?

From Barry:
#2 is much nicer than the 1st, or am I missing something?

No Barry!(whata’ cute name!) :):D

U see, I’m trying to give my black circle the look of a badge. I’m sure you’ve seen those round badges before….and some people, especially kids and teens, usually pin them on their school-bags etc.

Although the image quality of #1 is poor compared to #2, the sheens in #1 is more like those seen in badges than #2….that’s the point! 🙂

I’ve been using all kinds of combinations to achieve the shape of those sheens in #1, but in vain.(from handmade ellipses + Gaussian blur to the standard Layer Effects to Channels and such)

It is exactly because of this kinda sheens that makes the circle look like a badge. Some other examples are :

So, can anyone give me some guidance here? Thanks! 🙂

Have a nice nice day,
Xeon. 😉

try this method. it’s what got me started w/3d shapes. great stuff. you’ll need to modify it for your buttons once you get the basic technique down.

Thanks a lot, Dave! Well, I’ve made some improvements and the newer version is at <http://www.sheencal.com/Sample2.gif>

But I need to go through the tutorial if I wanna achieve really realistic badges effect. Thanks everyone! :):):D

Cheerio,

Ah! Once again, I’ve failed to achieve the effect.

Visit : <http://www.sheencal.com/OriginalSample.gif>

Impressed?! 🙂 That is the work I got from a web site.

Now, download <http://www.sheencal.com/MySample.psd> and open it.

See the difference? My badge doesn’t even look metallic after hours of non-stop trying and tweaking, not to mention the sheens they have.
In fact, my badge looks more bubbly than metallic.

Do I really need to use curves, levels, color balance and full lighting effects to achieve this? Does anyone has some tips?

Thanks,
Xeon! 🙂

I did it (or something similar) using 3 copies of a layer with a black circle. Then I used layer effect like this:

top layer: Inner Shadow Lighten mode
middle layer: Bevel and Emboss Lighten mode
bottom layer: Bevel and Emboss Normal mode

See if you can get it based on that information. If you want my file, you can email me. (replace "spam" with "com")
