I am, for some inexplicable reason, having trouble creating an alpha channel that works.

Here’s what I am doing.

1. Starting with a simple layer (which sits on top of another layer) I change it to a grayscale image, select it and copy it.
2. I then revert (using CTRL-ALT-Z) the image back to colour.
3. Next I select the “channels tab” and click on “Create new channel” which makes a channel named “Alpha1”.
4. I then paste the previously copied grayscale image into the newly created alpha channel.

At this point I would expect the layer below this to become visible but it is not. The Alpha channel appears to do nothing at all (I have the channel options to “marked Areas, Colour to 255,255,255 and opacity to 0% but this should not affect the alpha channels functionality in any way as I understand it.)

Any idea what I am doing incorrectly? If need be I am willing to send my project to you for further clarification.

I am using Photoshop 7.
