I don’t have CS but you should be able assign associations through Folder Options. What do you mean by "Windows won’t allow it"?
That’s what I tried to do. I click on the Photoshop CS executable and Windows just ignores the request and uses the Photoshop 7.0 executable. It’s very very odd.
And believe me, I tried this about 10 times. It just won’t work.
Bob
That does sound odd. I assume then that the CS executable has the same name – photoshop.exe. When you get the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer what program opens when hit "edit"? Did you do a custom install and associate the files then? If not you try a re-install.
Also, to keep the Fax and Picture viewer from opening after you get your associations correct you can use "Open With" > "Photoshop" and check "Always
use the selected program to open this kind of file"
Tried it all. Doesn’t work.
Bob
is there a custom install? that’s where 6 and 7 let you choose associations. still waiting on cs. day 2 and counting.
Just trying to help, Bob. There’s always brute force – uninstall PS7.
CS didn’t give me the choice even with the custom install. Rather than uninstall 7, I renamed the executable to disable it and Windows still wouldn’t let me select CS. I’d browse to it, select it and then the Fax and Picture View would be selected anyway.
Like I said, real strange stuff.
Bob
I meant uninstall it now. I assume you didn’t install to the same directory as Photoshop 7, right?
Nah, not really worth the bother. I do appreciate the input but it’s not worth killing myself over. I really threw this out there in case anyone else has it happen.
If not, we’ll just chalk it up to a gremlin. 🙂

From my post in CS Forum <
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.2cce2d14/4>
One problem I have found so far is file accusations. I had BMP, JPG and TIF associated with PS double clicking these files started PS7. PSCS does not show up in the Windows XP file types dialogue and I could not find any way to change the association to PSCS. I the end I uninstalled PS7.01 (reinstalled PSCS just in case removing PS had broken anything). But PSCS does not show as one of the recommended programs in the file types dialogue so setting the associations was a bit of a challenge but its done now.
Update 1:
I got the BMP to work by deleting the file type and re-adding it. With JPG and TIF I fond that if you go to Advanced and edit and/or add the open action and brows to Photoshop.exe it works. Just trying right clicking on a file and using Open with
browsing to Photoshop.exe does not take.
Update 2:
After rebooting just now I see that Photoshop CS is now visible in the Recommended programs options.
Maybe having PS7 associated with JPGs etc causes a conflict in the registry after manually associating PSCS with file types must sort this out after a reboot.
With JPG and TIF I fond that if you go to "Advanced" and edit and/or add
the ‘open’ action and brows to Photoshop.exe it works. Just trying right clicking on a file and using ‘Open with." browsing to Photoshop.exe does not take.
That’s the way I think it should work – "Open with" doesn’t change the original association, if you look at folder options after doing this you’ll notice that the "Advanced" button has changed to "Restore". I only use it after associations are made as a quick way to stop Windows Picture and Fax viewer from opening
The Open with
should take if you check the Always open with box, I think.
In the file type manager dialogue it should have been possible to browse to Photoshop.exe but that did not take but I think that was because I still had PS7 installed at the time and PSCS was not showing up as an installed program.
Now that PSCS has shown up as an installed program it maybe easier to change associations next time. As its 2:30am here (UK) I will leave further experimenting till tomorrow.
Got it. You set off a few light bulbs. I didn’t bother hitting restore before, but I did this time. That changed the button to advanced and that allowed me to make the change. BTW, I didn’t need to uninstall 7.
But…there’s a bug at work here. Any comments from our friends at Adobe?
Bob
Good to see you got it working, Bob
But I don’t understand – what is the bug?

I don’t think it’s a bug bob. It’s a feature. Of windows specifically. There’s a reg setting somewhere that stores that original association info. I tried to track it down one day but gave up after about 10 mins as it really wasn’t worth it. But it’s there. If you really want to track it down, start in the registry in the HKCR folder and go to the file type. Note the class id, search it. Start drilling down and searching as you come up with more ids. It gets confusing quickly though so be careful!
There’s obviously a bug in the installer that doesn’t associate those files with PS CS AND keeps Windows from associating them with CS unless you jump through hoops.
Bob
I agree that it’s partially Windows, but the installer should either let you pick the associations or do it automatically.
Bob
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
Content Type = "image/jpeg"
PerceivedType = "image"

Nah, one false move in there and I’m out of business. I got it fixed but I still think there’s a problem (okay it’s not a bug) in the installer.
Bob
If the install didn’t change the original JPG and TIF association (that’s what a non-custom install of PS7 does) then I would expect it to open with PS7. If you used "Open With" to try to fix this you’ve masked the way into it through Folder Options because the "advanced" button changes to "restore"

oh. in the installer. maybe. i got the choices in the standalone version so i’m not sure.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
yes, that’s where it STARTS. Keep digging. 🙂
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithProgids
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\CLSID = {25336920-03F9-11cf-8FD0-00AA00686F13}
etc etc. EXCEPT. on my machine that class id leads to an html doc, which leads to mozilla, but that’s just the DEFAULT opener. my default action is "Preview" which opens windows pix and fax viewr. Edit opens up ms paint. edit w/photoshop brings up CS (cool) and of course there’s open with. there is no "Open" in my context menu on jpgs, which is what would go to mozilla
Explorer> Tools> folder options> file types brings up the Restore button, which sets me back to Mozilla as the opener (per the registry). It’s where the associations go in the reg after you hit change that things get flakey.
Like I said, I’m not digging around in the registry, but I’m wondering if this has to do with having done a custom install of PS 7.0.
Bob
I have the same problem, when i try to re-associate *.RAF with CS Windows seems to think the photoshop.exe is still the one for 7.1 this must be a registry quirk, as the directories are clearly different, even if the file name is the same.
