Gradients on Photographed images….

Hi,

I have a query with regards Photoshop. I am currently using version 7.0 and what I’d like to be able to do is to take an image and make half of it a gradient. I need the actual image to fade out and become the gradient. I have never known how to acheive this in Photoshop. I would like to be able to choose the colour the image fades into. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Don’t need a filter.

Assuming your pic is the "background" layer, make it "normal" by double-clicking on its name in the layers palette.
Insert a solid colour layer underneath [of the colour you choose]. Add a layer mask to the image and click on its thumbnail. Apply a gradient to this using the gradient tool. [You may need to do this a few times to get the effect you want].
