In short, you don’t. You can bring them into Illustrator or Corel Draw and save them a EPS files. Those will open in Photoshop.

Yes you can bring them into PS if you have the proper WMF plugin. The one I have is for PS7. Would you like to have a copy of it? I am sure that it is legitimate to do this, since I didn’t pay for it. PS CS seems to already have the WMF plugin in it. Let me know and I can Email it to you. It is only 55KB big.

Or you can open them in Paint, and save as bitmaps. Crude, but effective.

There are also some freeware programs out there that handle .bmp and can save as .gif or .jpeg. Check those out if you don’t have an illustration program.

The Gimp <http://www.gimp.org>, a free program, can import WMF and export PSD.

Kathy,

I have a (freeware) WMF import plug-in. If you like I will email it to you.

Ron…

Is there a Mac version of that plugin?

Phosphor,

I don’t know of any Mac version. I have this plug-in for many years now and can’t remember the website I got it from. I tried to find it again recently but couldn’t. It probably no longer exists.
It’s a small plug-in (WMFFORMA.8BI – 56320 bytes) that should be placed in the File Formats folder. Maybe it’s not different from the Windows version, I don’t know…

Dear Experienced PhotoShop users,

I have some .wmf files I would like to open and use in PhotoShop. I notice, however that my CS version doesn’t seem to have an import filter for such a file.

Is there a suitable workaround or am I SOL?

TIA

Not sure what system you are on, if it is Mac Graphic
Converter can do the trick.

In that case the following software can open WMF files:

MS WordPad, MS-Works, ViewPrint, Paint Shop Pro

Maybe that can give you a work around to get it into
Photoshop, with or without using a screen shot.

Irfanview will open a wmf file and can then save it as a jpeg that can be opened in Photoshop. Irfanview is a free download. I believe the url is www.irfanview.com.

WMF is an acronym for Windows MetaFile. They are normally a vector format, but *can* be bitmapped image graphics, or a vector format graphic with a bitmapped preview image.

In addition to the list provided by "PH" they can usually be opened by most vector graphics editors, such as Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, Serif DrawPlus, and etcetera.

You might have better luck using one of those programs to open the file and rasterize it (e.g., turn it into a bitmap and resave it in one of the common image graphics formats).

Also, Illustrator Corel Draw, Freehand etc. WMF is vector art, remember.

Thanks all for your responses.

I do have the Draw suite which opens wmf easily. I just prefer PS for certain things and interestingly, the directions from this clip art collection claims to open PS as well.

Wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something in the translation.

Thank you all again!

How did Adobe called Photoshop ‘light’ back in 1997? (not Elements!) can’t remember….
(sometimes shipped with a scanner) but Adobe supplied it with a Wmfformat.8bi file/format plugin,
I use it since …works also in CS.
