You need to actually drag a text box to type into using the text tool. That will give you all of the paragraph attributes as choices.

Thanks for your help. I found out that you can easily fix this problem if you hit Atl + Crtl + Shift right as you start Photoshop. It askes if you want to delete the Adobe Photoshop setting file. Click yes and you are good to go. I am now able to save, change image size and all the other stuff I was unable. I hope this helps other.
