I loaned my friend my old digital camera, no focus, no memory upgrade all in all an old digital camera. He used 640×480, the only way to take the pictures. The pictures came out all not focused, is there a way to salvage the pictures, it was his daughters graduation. I have Photoshop 6 and a downloaded trial version of Photoshop CS. Any help is appreciated. Please don’t give me a short answer, be patient and gentle, this is all new to me, the program and all…………

Peter,
Sorry, can’t help you. I’ll be surprised (and impressed) if anyone can explain how to bring out of focus photographs into focus in current versions of Photoshop. Your best bet might be to experiment with the various filters to achieve something more artsy. But that’s not why I’m responding to your post. I’m curious about the trial version of CS. Usually Adobe cripples demos. Does the save function work? If so, for how long.

the only way i have ever found to improve focus in blurry pics is to reduce the size quite a lot and then sharpen them using the photoshop filter – however, since your pics are already quite small this may not be an option for you – and it never delivers very good results either

sorry

Thanks steph, I guess I can’t help my friend. I helped him with the camera, but the screwed up pictures are out of the question now. Many thanks again and again………Peter

have you tried Neat Image ?? just do a search for the title – it comes in several formats – the DEMO version is totally functional and is free.

Of course it all depends on how out of focus the pics are ?

Neat Image is a digital filter designed to reduce visible noise in digital photographic images. It is a tool for owners of digital cameras, flatbed and slide scanners; and is for use by both professional photographers, and digital image processing enthusiasts.

Neat Image not only reduces the high ISO noise associated with image sensors (CMOS, CCD) in digital cameras and scanners, it can also reduce the film grain visible in scanned slides and negatives, JPEG artifacts of overcompressed images, and color banding, and at the same time makes images sharper. Neat Image is indispensable in low-light, sport, and action photography.

Same question asked on Call for Help and answered by the Photoshop expert. Only a little out of focus can use unsharp mask, but any thing more than a little forget it!

Photoshop can’t do it, but Unshake might be able to:

Noise-reduction programs will do no good, since noise reduction is more or less the opposite of deblurring.

There is a free utility called "unshake" (try googling that) which actually does what you are asking for but it’s not really great. What you are asking for is rocket-science/alchemy. Unshake goes through all kinds of calculations to try & figure out what caused the blur & what your lense characteristics are. I’ve read about similar very expensive "espionage" programs that require inputting the exact condtitions so actually this is quite an accomplishment.
